How do I send messages from my home email account when connected to the University network?


If you wish to use an email handler like Outlook or Outlook Express to send emails from your home email account while connected to our network they have to be sent via the AU outgoing mail server smtphost.aber.ac.uk


Windows Mail

  • Click on the options menu at the top left and select Options then Email Accounts
  • Double click the email account you wish to change
  • Open the Servers tab and change the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server to smtphost.aber.ac.uk
  • Tick the box My server requires authenication
  • Click on the Settings button and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server then click OK
  • Open the Advanced tab
  • Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) box value to 587 and tick the box This server requires a secure connection (SSL) below. Do not tick the second box that says this further down the window
  • Click OK and then Close

Outlook 2010

  • Click File tab on the top bar
  • Click Account Settings then Account Settings
  • Double click the home email account to open its settings window
  • Set Outgoing Mail Server field to smtphost.aber.ac.uk
  • Click More settings ... button
  • Open the Outgoing Server tab
  • Tick the box My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
  • Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server
  • Open the Advanced tab
  • Change the value in the Outgoing server(SMTP) to 587 and change the drop-down box below it to TLS
  • Press OK
  • Click Next , Finish and Close

Outlook 2007

  • Go to Tools and Account setting
  • Double click the home email account to open its settings window
  • Set Outgoing Mail Server field to smtphost.aber.ac.uk
  • Click More settings ... button
  • Open the Outgoing Server tab
  • Tick the box My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
  • Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server
  • Open the Advanced tab
  • Change the value in the Outgoing server(SMTP) to 587 and change the drop-down box below it to TLS
  • Press OK
  • Click Next , Finish and Close

Outlook 2003

  • Go to Tools and E-mail Accounts
  • Make sure you select the radio button View or change existing e-mail accounts
  • Select your home email account from the list and click Change
  • Set Outgoing Mail Server field to smtphost.aber.ac.uk
  • Click More settings ... button
  • Open the Outgoing Server tab
  • Tick the box My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
  • Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server
  • Open the Advanced tab
  • Change the value in the Outgoing server(SMTP) to 587 and change the drop-down box below it to TLS
  • Press OK
  • Click Next , Finish and Close
