How do I access e-resources off campus?

Aberystwyth University (AU) subscribes to a wide range of high-quality online information.

This information is limited for use to registered users only so you must authenticate yourself as an Aberystwyth University user when accessing most AU-subscribed electronic information resources off campus.

The first time

  • Set up your computer to use VPN

You need only do this once. Once you have set up VPN you will have an icon on your desktop ready for you to double-click on each time you need to connect to it.

Every time
  • Connect to VPN with your AU email address and password
  • Sign In to Primo http://primo.aber.ac.uk/ with your AU username and password

If you can successfully complete these two steps you can gain off campus access to the majority of AU-subscribed electronic information resources and their full text.

Find advice for off-campus access

Click on

  • View Online (or sometimes Services ) in Primo search results to view full-text or visit a database or journal

  • the @aber button in any electronic resource you are viewing

  • the Show Info button to the right of any database in Primo: Databases A-Z

to find custom off-campus access advice for that resource.

There are three options - you only need to follow one of these even if you are offered more than one:

  • Where the advice is Off-campus: please use AberVPN ... , just click through to the publisher's web page.

  • Where the advice is Off-campus: please use Login@Aber ...  , note the rest of the advice and proceed as advised when you click through to the publisher's web page. You may be advised to click on one of

    • Shibboleth login
    • UK Access Federation Login
    • Institutional login
    • Aberystwyth University login

and choose Aberystwyth University from a list of participating institutions.

  • There are a very small number of resources for which you are directed this password list . Note the login and password for the resource you are accessing and type it directly into the login

If you are having problems accessing e-resources off campus please see our troubleshooter

FYI

  • when clicking to view a full-text journal article you may be directed to the journal home page rather than to the article itself. In these cases note the volume and issue of the journal, either from your search result or the off-campus advice window, then browse to your article.

  • The A-Z of Electronic Information Resources allows you to click on an individual resource from a list to view it. If you use this instead of Primo, you will be prompted for your AU username and password when you first click on a resource with an F button to the right of it.

  • there are an increasing number of open access journals which are freely available.
